Rising to the Challenge – Hire King’s Role in the Building Collapse Rescue Effort
“The first week of my work was unlike anything I could have imagined. The situation was challenging, but it also showed me the strength of teamwork and determination in the face of adversity,” said an employee of Hire King.
On the afternoon of May 6th, 2024, a building collapse occurred, and Hire King was on-site immediately. The team, led by Riaan de Beer, the Director and Owner of Hire King, recognized the scale of the disaster upon arrival. They quickly organized their efforts and began working throughout the night. “We knew the situation was critical, and we quickly focused on how we could help,” the employee recalls.
The setting was grim. The devastation was immense, and the team was confronted with the harrowing sight of collapsed buildings, debris everywhere, and the uncertainty of what lay beneath. “It was overwhelming at first, but we knew we had to push forward,” says the employee. Despite the shock, they worked tirelessly, prioritizing the rescue of any survivors.
The team’s first priority was to assist with rescuing any survivors. “We arrived just in time to help a woman who was trapped under debris. She was shaken but alive, and we ensured she was escorted to the ambulance for further care,” the employee explains.
As the work continued, it became apparent that the team would also be recovering those who hadn’t survived. “We used our paving breakers to carefully extract bodies from beneath the rubble. While it was a difficult task, it was crucial to ensure that families could have closure and no one would be left behind,” they add.
The team relied heavily on their equipment to move debris effectively. “Our Kubota machinery played a vital role in moving large rubble, clearing pathways for rescue teams. Spotlights were set up to provide lighting, allowing volunteers to continue working safely through the night,” they explain.
In this operation, Hire King was joined by other organizations like GrowGreen Plant Hire and Ruwacon Construction, who sent teams to assist. “We had a total of 20 volunteers from Hire King working alongside others, contributing their skills and resources. It was truly inspiring to see how everyone came together to help,” says the employee.
Despite the challenging conditions, the team remained focused on the mission. “Our role was not only about rescuing and recovering but also about organizing the area and restoring some order to the situation,” they explain.
After the mission, invoices for the labor were requested, but Hire King made the decision to decline sending them. “Our priority was to support the community in need, not to profit from the situation,” they state.
In recognition of Hire King’s role in the recovery effort, the Western Cape Government presented the team with a Premier’s Certificate of Appreciation. “It was an honor to receive this acknowledgment, but for us, the real reward was knowing we helped make a difference,” the employee shares.
Reflecting on the experience, the employee concludes, “This operation showed the importance of teamwork and community. It was an intense but rewarding experience, and we are proud to have been a part of the recovery effort, offering support and helping bring some closure to those affected.”
